Started simply as a “crazy, but just may work” idea, Celtic Pink Floyd has some amazing vocalists and musicians contributing their expertise to this twelve-track CD. Arrangers, producers and musicians, Damon Stout & Brian Stout are the guilty parties behind the madness, all while working in conjunction with producer Michael Vail Blum (Titan Music Inc) to form a hybrid of traditional Celtic music combined with classic rock.

While not a “band” in the traditional sense, each musician came into the project and provided their individual attributes to create a sensational album. The masses agree, which put the Celtic Pink Floyd album up as the #5 spot on the CD Baby Top Seller Chart.

Released on St. Patrick’s Day 2011, this album has become one of the finest crossover albums in recent history… even with CMH Celtic’s Erin Go Rock! album released back in 2009.
Just to spread the word regarding this fundraiser for the officers who lost their lives during the Dorner rampage.

MacKay was a piper, loved a good pint, and was a beloved family man and officer. While I never had direct contact with him, friends that share camaraderie within the Southern California Celtic scene have done nothing but post amazing things about this man, and quite honestly, when news came that MacKay had fallen, I had not seen that kind of fury in any of them before. It seems like MacKay was beyond the normal man, and a true light in the world has gone out.
Each step echoes the fusion that the Irish culture is melding into, both while keeping true to the traditional Irish roots and the spirit it encompasses and the new sub-genres it’s creating. These urban rhythms tap into the similar stylings of The Hammerstep Initiative, and the individuals who can hear or see an Irish Step beat in any kind of music. Urban Step Dancing is an encouraging and enthusiastic move for dancers using their hard-earned skills and creating something new for themselves.

The steady rhythm courses through the entirety of the song, adding the step dancing in as percussion. Metal taps were worn for a higher pitch, and the traditional hard shoes added a lower pitch. Hearing the effects of the dancing within the song alone is nowhere near as amazing as seeing the footwork. This is the real-time speed of world class dancers.

Tap Tronic has emerged onto the step dancing scene, and more is on the way from them. Keep them in your sights. The music came from Adventure Club’s remix of “Crave You”.
If you didn’t know it was there, or weren’t looking for it, you’d probably just drive on past it. The Irish Times Pub is nestled between apartment buildings, next to a commercial building that looks like it used to be an apartment building, and near a freeway overpass. There’s a tree that blocks the illuminated pub sign.

We arrived early in the evening for dinner and to get seats at a booth. The Gothic style chandeliers were really rather fascinating and cast some of the only light available, but the lack of Irish décor (flags strung around) didn’t give the air of an Irish pub. The pre-entertainment ambiance was set with static radio playing over the speaker system. After a while, the static noise blended with the twinge of an oncoming headache.

The Shakers were playing that night, and definitely one of the highlights of the evening. Jodie’s screamin’, rockin’ voice carried through the pub, and out onto the streets of Culver City. It was a bit mind-boggling to watch how any band would be able to maneuver their equipment onto the small ‘stage’ in such a Tetris-like manner. While the pub does host various Celtic-inclined bands once in awhile, it looks like the weekend entertainment tends to favor more of the cover bands. When a good band comes around, it’s a packed house. Literally… Packed. No moving room. It took about 20 minutes to maneuver from the ‘stage’ area to the restrooms, which couldn’t be more than 15 yards away. I’m not sure what the maximum number of people was set at, but it could certainly be a safety issue if there was an emergency. I doubt that the pub has trap doors to escape through.

The food wasn’t able to add much to the hopes of the evening. It’s the standard drunken munch food: burgers, fish and chips, bulk-warehouse style fried foods, shepherd’s pie, etc. We ordered a burger without the bun, fish and chips, and the shepherd’s pie.

These entrees weren’t anything to get excited about.

The burger was a burger. Aside from the fact that the kitchen staff added some extra greenery and veggies to the plate (substituted a salad for fries), it was a standard hamburger and cheese thing.

The shepherd’s pie didn’t have any depth to it. The vegetables inside were tender, and the mashed potatoes on top honestly had more seasoning than the meat inside. This was a disappointing dish for something that can normally be considered a comfort food, and can so easily be made at home.

With the Fish and Chips, the chips were palatable, but the fish had an odd, subtle tang to it. And yes, this was before Vinegar had the chance to be added. On the plus side, no one got sick from it, so it might have been an added seasoning of some kind.

If you’re going to the pub for the food only, you might be better off at one of the nearby Asian or specialty style eateries. If you’re going to the pub for a few drinks (which are reasonably priced), by the time the food arrives, your taste buds might be numb enough to make it a better eating experience.

The drinks were poured quickly, and eventually someone came around to bus the plates from the table. Aside from lacking someone to actually take food orders and keep drinks refreshed over on the dining side, the staff and service were friendly and accommodating.

After the first or second set, we bid adieu to the band, and took our leave. The lack of Air Conditioning on the hot Los Angeles night made the pub smell like a locker room and overall experience left a feeling of “icky-crankiness”.

If you plan on checking out the Irish Times Pub, ponder on visiting on a chilly winter day when no entertainment is scheduled. You might get a waitress running around helping out, and more bearable indoor temperature conditions. There are a good number of TVs showing the various sports channels, if that’s your cup of tea. In regards to possibly better food being served during the day, well, post your experience in the comments below!
It’s that time of year in Los Angeles, when the long hot summer days transition to shorter hot summer days. It also brings about a convergence of Irish talent into Los Angeles for the Annual Irish Film Festival. 2012 marks the fifth gathering, and it’s building up excitement as each year passes.

The festivities kicked off on Wednesday night with the Festival’s first film, a Q&A session with the director, along with a rousing and high spirited Ceili-style party. The pints were poured and the hors d’oeuvres were elegant (including the mountain of cheese carried by an enthusiastic chap). The red carpet shimmered with dazzling women and dapper gents. The silver screen was alight that night with director Kieron J. Walsh’s film “Jump”.
The film let out, and the party began. Music was provided by Waking Kate, a local Celtic-fusion group featuring the talents of Brian Walsh, Peter Romano, Chris Loken, and Zac Leger, and Ceili dancers from the Celtic Arts Center in North Hollywood. The vivacious and long musical sets provided the upbeat tempo to carry the dancers through the Siege of Ennis, Walls of Limerick, and other dances. Major congrats need to go out for several handful of Festival attendees that kicked off their high heels and jackets and joined in the dancing. For a 5 minute lesson, they did fabulously!
The trip was made for Comic Con. Well, technically it was to loiter around outside Comic Con, since tickets were nowhere to be had. Well, that and to check out The Sheleighly’s, an Irish Folk Rock Awesome band based out of the Ridgecrest area. Dublin Square has been a pub that so many of the So Cal bands have hit in the normal circuits, that curiosity had been peaked for awhile.

The journey began in the San Fernando Valley on a Saturday, and 4 or 5 hours later (at one point, the time just started blending together in traffic), rolled into San Diego. Excitement was building as a moderately priced parking lot that allowed overnight was located, since we were roughing it by camping in the car that night. Sadly, since we got into town so late, we didn’t have time to dress for the Comic Con loiterings, which involved piratical shenanigans. We opted for normal clothed shenanigans in the company of our pirate accomplices. Side note, loitering outside Comic Con is amazing within itself.

And then we started feeling peckish.

A few blocks from the Convention Center, Dublin Square is well within walking distance*. The pub front façade gives off an air of the architecture and bustling atmosphere reminiscent of Dublin city. With the talents of O’Sullivan Interiors, Ireland’s most authentic pub design company and based out of Waterford, Tynan’s Pub was recreated for San Diego. It couldn’t have been more spot-on for that authentic feel if they had actually broken down Tynan’s Pub and shipped the lot of it to San Diego. From the warm solid Irish oak, down to the moldings, panels, and hand carvings, every detail had been painstakingly reproduced. This attention to detail has created an amazingly inviting pub.

Happy to report that the food is just as amazing as the pub. While the Guinness pints appeared to have been poured in a rush, we opted to switch to Smithwick’s (because who doesn’t love an Irish red?), which was a lighter choice, and accompanied the meat laden dinners nicely.

Our dinner included soup and entrees:

Harp Beer Cheese Soup (in a bread bowl): It’s cheesy deliciousness combining Parmesan, Cheddar, and Jack, and has strong undertones of the Lager. As a bit of a bread and carb snob, the bread bowl wasn’t as fresh as one would hope for it to be. The entrees ended up coming out fairly quickly, so after a few tastes of the soup, it was put aside to keep as something to hold us over through the evening’s music. The soup itself actually kept decently well, and even cold, was welcoming in between the pints of beer.

Guinness Braised Beef: The beef was incredibly tender, and just shy of melting off of the fork. The sauce/gravy was flavorful and deep. The mashed potatoes weren’t anything to scream about, but they were palatable. While not the star attraction in a plate with Guinness Braised Beef, what blew me away were the seasonal veggies. On the menu, it appeared to be just an added on side to balance out the mashed potatoes. Ever wary but accepting of the fact that they might not be eaten, the veggies, more often than not, usually end up being flavorless and limp. Not so in this case. It was actually the first thing completely consumed from the plate. They were well seasoned and properly cooked to keep a bit of the crisp.

Guinness Meat Pie: Slightly different from the Guinness Braised Beef, this dish brings a bit of a higher level to the whole “meat pie” world. This is not something to eat with your hands. It comes as Guinness braised sirloin tips (again, just about tender to the touch) and sandwiched between two flaky pastry pieces. Accompanying it was a standard dinner salad. A bit of lackluster plating for a directly off-the-menu option, but the meat pie was definitely filling and hit that comfort food spot.

While seriously hoping to have enough room for dessert, even with the remaining hours spent at the pub dancing, laughing, and tipping back the pints, we weren’t able to partake in any of them. Perhaps a future trip will involve a dessert run to sample the Irish Bread Pudding with Whiskey Sauce, Bailey’s Crème Brulee, the Whiskey Cake, or Irish Sundae (“Warm Irish Whiskey Brownie, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and Bailey’s”).

The dinner service was prompt and quick. Our drinks usually didn’t stay empty for too long, and the wait staff we encountered were friendly. As the evening progressed, the pub started picking up a bit more momentum as Comic Con attendees started venturing out looking for a good time, and as the band started prepping for their set. It was at this point that we had started having to hunt down our waitress for more drinks and water refills. It’s completely understandable, but at one point, after a rather vigorous jig, the water glasses stayed empty for about 10 minutes after we had asked for it.

All in all, Dublin Square mixed with The Sheleighly’s and Comic Con presented an amazing weekend experience. The Ceili & Craic tastebuds hope to be venturing back in the future.

*If you’re not able to foot it, there are the exciting bike hoppers that can cart you around most of the Gaslamp Quarter for a nominal fee.
Is there anything more perfect than discovering a new pub, where the food is good, the music is craicin’, and so inviting that it makes you feel at home?

Feckin’ Around is the new section at Ceili & Craic, and will feature pub reviews. Everything from grub to the pub house, and the people who make it what it is. From the elaborate to the simple, no pub will go unnoticed. Of course, this would imply that road trips are necessary, which adds to the adventure.
